I must admit, every time I see one of those digital picture frames it makes me wince. I’m not sure why, but they just seem so cheap and ineffectual. Something that just sits there running through batteries or electricity that no one even looks at 90% of the time. Finally, someone has done something useful with the concept. Ality, developer of innovative digital home products, has improved on its PIXXA digital frame by adding Wi-Fi 802.11b/g connectivity. This has allowed it to do all sorts of cool things. The coolest being an interface/sync with Google Calendar, complete with full alert functionality. In addition, it features Photo Messenger to send and receive digital photos just like instant messenger, Live Calendar, Live News and weather reports. Most importantly, the design is really decent. I can see this actually being useful in a kitchen or on a nightstand. Ality also offers an online account for photo-sharing services that includes 50MB of storage for up to 600 photos and the facility to automatically resize photos. The new PIXXA will become available in the first half of 2008.

Okay, so I know some folks are saying that skulls may be over, but l don’t think I would mind if someone gifted me something like this. The Swarovski Skull Pocket Watch from ToyWatch is a beauty. As you can imagine with a name like Swarovski, you know it’s got some serious crystallization. Despite its plastic case, it has a crystal crusted face and a real nice sterling silver chain done up with skull-shaped chain links. If you’re feeling a bit guilty about the ostentatiousness, you’ll be happy to hear that ToyWatch will donate a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each watch to The Alzheimer’s Association. The Swarovski Skull Pocket Watch will run you a cool $850.

BONUS GIZMO: Sorry, I know this a little out of the ordinary, but I came across this crazy product that I just had to share with you. I guarantee that you will watch the video at least twice and wonder why this isn’t incorporated in all cars. It’s the Disappearing Car Door from JATECH. I don’t want to give anything away before you watch the video, so I think it’s better if you just enjoy it with as little explanation as possible. I give you the Disappearing Car Door. Enjoy and Happy Holidays!

I want to apologize in advance to those of you out there that don’t get all that excited about tools, let alone considering one beautiful. I understand, honestly, I really do. But those of you who do, and you know who you are, this is what I’m talking about. Douglas Tools only make hammers and they take it very seriously. These wood-handled beauties are made for both the trade professional and do-it-yourselfer and feature H2IT (Head-Handle Interface Technology). According to Douglas the patented H2IT is “exclusive to Douglas hammers” and “provides a tremendous advantage in strength, durability and leverage.” This technology combines the flexibility of wood with the strength of steel which produces what founder, Todd Douglas Coonrad likes to say, “Wood where you want it - Steel where you need it”.

This is so surreal, like going back to the future. Taking a cue from those sailing ships of old, two German companies have teamed up and created a kite system that uses wind power to haul enormous ships in an effort to cut fuel costs. However, unlike the sails on traditional sailing ships, the SkySail is tethered to a 15-meter high mast which flies up to 300 meters high to harness powerful prevailing winds. I know it sounds sort of silly, but these fuel costs savings can be significant. According to SkySails, annual average fuel costs can be lowered between 10-35% depending on actual wind conditions and actual time deployed. Under optimal wind conditions, fuel consumptions can be temporarily reduced up to 50%! Click here to see it in action.

Holy Jeebus! This week Canalys, a leading provider of consulting and market analysis for the high-tech industry, released a report of mobile phone market share and it’s got some folks shakin’ in their boots. The report showed that Apple, in just its first full quarter of sales, has captured 27% of the market share in North America! And what makes it even more remarkable is that the iPhone is currently sold only in the US through a single carrier, AT&T, who doesn’t even provide service to much of Vermont, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Alaska! This puts the iPhone in second place, bested only by RIM BlackBerry. This on the heels of Microsoft’s CEO Steve Balmer claiming that Apple wouldn’t capture more than two to three percent of the market and his own Windows Mobile platform as having or soon acquiring 60 to 80% of the smartphone market. Oops. Just think what’ll happen when the Jesus phone starts marching through Europe.

With high-speed broadband so prevalent today, VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol) has become a real solution. Add in fee-free products like Skype and Express Talk and things get even better. Unfortunately, the hardware has taken a bit of time to catch up. We are just starting to see some serious products. One such product is the new TRIO USB Speakerphone from Ipevo. Optimized for Skype, it does triple duty as a personal hands-free speakerphone, a conference phone and a personal handset for private conversations (it can be switched to handheld mode with simple toggle switch). It also has built-in recording capabilities for those Linda Tripp conversations that you may need to record (outputs as WAV). The specs are very impressive. It features 16 bit DSP, full duplex technology, voice sampling rate of 8KHz, echo cancellation and voice reception of 1.5 m2. In addition, it comes in white and grey, is Mac & PC compatible and will run you $79.99.

It’s about time someone did something with the outside of an audio component. There’s a reason why we hide them away in cabinets and audio closets. Olive has handed over its famous Opus Nº5 digital audio system to famed designer Karim Rashid for some extreme makeover goodness. The Opus Nº5 features Olive’s “Pure Audio System” (PAS) technology developed with Texas Instruments to provide high-precision full-bodied vinyl-like audio playback from digital sources. The device incorporates an optical disc reader — you insert audio CDs, click the “Record” button and Opus imports, tags and archives the CD giving you instant access to up to 2200 of your albums. The new look comes in four new flavors: Digitalia, Morphologic, Spectra and Fusion.

This is a bit frightening and exciting all at the same time. GlowPaint glow-in-the-dark paint company, MPK Co. has developed self-luminous micro particles called Litrospheres™ which will stay glowing for 12+ years, are inexpensive, non-toxic, not affected by heat or cold, 5,000-pound crush resistant and require no power source! That means no more batteries or power needed for things such as bicycle safety, sports/camping equipment or street signage and markings. The applications are limitless. How does it work? According to MPK, the particles use “a radioactive gas, whose “soft” emission of electrons from the beta emitting gas cannot penetrate the glass or polymer wall of the microspheres.” Huh? Did he say radioactive particles? That’s the frightening part. Here’s a copy of the submission by Steve Stark to NASA tech Briefs for the first public exposure of this technology.

It seems Palm can’t do anything right these days. On the heels of the Treo’s outdated hardware, poorly executed Windows-based units and now the Foleo fiasco, Palm has announced this week that revenue from the second fiscal quarter will be $30 million less than originally predicted. Why you ask? Palm isn’t really saying. Only that they failed to qualify “a product that the company had previously expected to have certified within the quarter,” and “had higher-than-expected warranty expenses.” On top of all of this, Palm’s stock hit a 52-week low on Friday and has nothing new on the horizon until 2009 when the new Palm OS is slated for release.

A beautiful tape dispenser? Why not. London-based designers Daniel Black and Martin Blum felt the same way. They couldn’t find one that suited their needs, so they designed one. Looking like something straight out of the Industrial Age, the Heavy-Weight Tape Dispenser has a cast zinc body weighing in at three pounds and features a forged stainless steel blade. This combination of weight and a super-sharp blade allows you to get your tape-jones on using just a single hand! That’s worth the price alone. Design Within Reach is featuring The Heavy-Weight Tape Dispenser right now for $60. Here’s some additional images of the beauty.

As I’ve said here before, gadgets that are both green and beautiful are few and far between. It’s even rarer to find one green, beautiful and functionally the better choice. Such is the case with the Tea Stick. Beautifully designed and constructed of stainless steel, the Tea Stick is a real looker. It’s also easy to use and requires nothing but the tea. That means no more tea bags. Besides, any serious tea drinker will tell you that loose-tea is the way to go. Although, I would hate to get caught by an over-zealous law enforcement officer with that stainless steel tube and a bag of dried tea on me! To use the Tea Stick, you simply slide out the spring-loaded insert, sprinkle in a little tea, stir into a cup of hot water and you’re ready to go. The Tea Stick can be had for the bargain price of $20.

This week I was about to tell you about Consumer Report’s 2008 Cellphone Service Survey so you could see how your provider stood up to the others. Or maybe the story that Comcast is about to unleash 100Mbps speed on their new DOCSIS 3.0 internet service. 100Mbps speed? That’s insane, right? Well, hold your horses. This tops them all. Last week scientists at Kyoto University matched up three 5-year old chimpanzees with nine college students in two tests of short-term memory. The results? Basically the students got bitch-slapped like a jailhouse queen. The test subjects were presented with numerals 1 to 9 and after the first number was touched, the other eight turned into white squares. The test was to touch all these squares in the order of the numbers that used to be there. The next test was similar with five numbers flashed on the screen, briefly, before they were replaced by white squares. Again, the test was to touch these squares in the proper sequence. What’s worse was that even with six months of training, three students failed to catch up to the three young chimps. For your viewing pleasure here is video clip 1 and video clip 2 of the chimp in action. He is spectacular.
