Don’t worry about running out of memory ever again. At least until next year when they double the capacity for half the price! Get the Patriot 16GB Secure Digital High-Capacity(SDHC) Flash Card. It’s Class 6, complies with SDA 2.0 specifications, has a high level of copy protection, is compatible with SDHC slot devices and has a write protection switch to avoid accidental data deletion. Newegg is featuring this monster for the low price of $89.99.

Wow, lighting sure has come a long way. To think, when I was a teenager, the most freaky we could get was a black light and those velvet posters. Ah, sweet memories. Now we’re talking about throwing your own Nu-Rave. This new LED from Thinkgeek has an IR remote which can turn the bulb on and off, adjust colors, transitions and brightness levels. It is capable of 16 specific colors (including White, Green, Blue, Red, Orange, Turquoise, Purple), has 4 transition effects (flash, strobe, fade, smooth) and fits into a standard light bulb socket! What else could you ask for? It currently retails for $50.

I’ve got two words for you; Me-ow. The folks at the Chocolate Design Agency have developed a phone concept I would sell my mother to the Huns for. The tasty new P-Per mobile phone has a browser that spans the entire surface of the display, a transparent display for camera mode, just 4 layers of construction, a titanium frame, and a wrap around flexible haptic LED touchscreen. In addition, it picked up a prestigious Red Dot Design Award. But don’t hate it because it’s beautiful, this sexy new concept is also green. It utilizes energy-saving e-paper, has only four layers of sustainable materials, and uses an Organic Radical battery. All of this goodness wrapped in a svelte 7mm form factor. It looks like they pulled the video. I’m not sure why, it was very good.

Hard to believe that when you purchase one cup of coffee (or tea) in a disposable container every day, you create about 23 lb of waste each year. Moreover, Styrofoam cups are the worst culprits, as they never degrade. That old Styrofoam cup will be there waiting for you 500 years from now! Americans throw away 25,000,000,000 Styrofoam cups every ear. That’s frightening. How about you pick up the new “I Am Not A Paper Cup” from Decor Craft. It is a 3.5″ x 6″ cup, just like the one you contributed to the landfill this morning. However, this reusable cup is constructed of double-walled porcelain, so you don’t need to double-up like traditional cups. And for your overflow protection, it has a cool silicone top like those new flexible baking dishes. These will run you $20 apiece and should be available for shipment in April. The original date in February was pushed back due to its popularity.

Geez, these days it seems like our civil liberties are disappearing quicker than Britney Spears’ sanity. This month, Adam M. Gershowitz, Assistant Professor of Law at South Texas College of Law, published a paper basically saying that after being stopped for a traffic violation, your cell phone’s messages, call history, contacts, pictures, etc could be searched. That’s right, the whole jimmy. Not that you would have anything incriminating… right? Basically, he explains that because many traffic violations are arrestable offenses, the police can treat your phone just like any other container they find on you or in your car, no different than a cigarette pack or a closed box. According to Gershowitz, these things can be searched without a warrant or probable cause under existing Supreme Court precedent. Yikes, they can already use those evil little machines to track your movements, what’s next?

Wow, there’s nothing like a nice slab of Lucite to get your attention. Tokujin Yoshioka’s new minimalist Tofu lamp makes Rauschenberg look like Hieronymus Bosch. Yoshioka, an apprentice to Shiro Kuramata and Issey Miyake and whose works can be found in the MoMA, Vitra and Centre Georges Pompidou collections, has created an amazingly simply, clean design consisting of just methacrylate (PMMA) and aluminum. It is created using a delicate manufacturing and cutting technique and uses a halogen bulb to create a perfect square of light. Just keep those pesky guests from getting their nasty little fingerprints all over it. It currently comes in two sizes and can be had for $560 or $640.

Looking to pick up that new cell phone? I understand, but just make sure you’re responsible about discarding the old one. I know you’ve heard about e-cycling many times here before, but apparently not everyone is getting it. How many phones do you think we are talking about here? Take a guess. How about 426,000 per day! What’s worse is that only about 20% are recycled. Those little bastards are chockfull of toxic compounds the EPA likes to call “persistent and bioaccumulative.” We’re talking about arsenic, lead, nickel-cadmium and brominated compounds. Many of these enter the environment when discarded cell phones are incinerated or when rainwater leaches the materials out of land-filled phones. Well now there are no more excuses. Here is a list of 50 ways that VOIP-News has graciously put together. Just as an aside, while doing research for this, I came across these great images by artist Chris Jordan. They’re pretty amazing.

It was only a matter of time. With its svelte little figure and shiny good looks, you knew it wouldn’t be long before the mean girls started pickin’ on the new MacBook Air. I have to admit, even if you’re a devout Mac fanboy, I think you will find this parody funny. Before you get upset, you should know that this film was edited using a MacBook. On the serious side, if you want to see what the pundits are really saying about the Air, click here to get the full poop.

Looking to pickup a decent pair of headphones? How about the Maximo iM-490S iMetal Stereo Earphones? Okay, so they aren’t Shures, but not everybody has a spare $300 lying around to spend on headphones. They’re well reviewed and should satisfy most of us. The Maximos feature 9mm neodymium drivers, 18Hz – 22kHz Frequency Response and come bundled with 3 sizes of ear tips, a carrying case and a lifetime warranty. Today’s Woot is featuring these for the low price of $14.99. Amazon currently has them listed for $43.24!

To me, this was the real standout from Macworld 2008 this week. I know it’s not all that sexy, like say a skinny little laptop or high definition iTunes, but it does something way cooler. Imagine a little white box that sits in your house, continuously and tirelessly backing up your raggedy old data. An important but unglamorous job. That is the nature of this type of work. It’s like an offensive lineman; you only notice them when they’re not there. The new Time Capsule from Apple is an innovative new backup device that will back up all of the Macs or PCs on your network automatically, either wired or wirelessly. So if you lose your hard drive or have deleted a file that you need, you can simply restore it from the Time Capsule. Additionally, it has a built-in power supply (no brick), one Gigabit Ethernet WAN port, three Gigabit LAN ports, one USB port, utilizes Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA/WPA-2), 128-bit WEP encryption and has a built-in NAT firewall supporting NAT-PMP. Zonks! And the best part? The new Time Capsule has a suggested retail price of just $299 for the 500GB model and $499 for 1TB worth of storage.

This isn’t your smelly old uncle’s VW Westfalia. You remember the Westfalias, don’t you? They were those VW buses built out as campers with that familiar pop-up top, sought after by so many hippies and surfers. I know what you’re thinking, practical and clever maybe, but gorgeous, nah. Well, you could not be more wrong. Designed by Alexandre Verdier, the newly redesigned Westfalia received the Special Prize from the Jury at the Caravaning Design Award 2006/2007 for new mobility. In addition to its fabulous design, the Verdier has some other hidden talents that nearly put it into THE GREEN this week. You see, it’s powered by a 200hp hybrid powerplant and has a 40 Watt-12 Volt Solar Panel affixed to its roof. Furthermore, this “SUN TRACKER” solar panel uses an on-board computer and a GPS (Global Positioning System) to calculate the optimal position. Here’s a great video highlighting all the sacchariny goodness (sorry about the music).

It’s all the buzz at Macworld 2008. The new MacBook Air looking sleek and trim, like Posh Spice on Atkins. So why not THE GIZMO or THE GORGEOUS? I’m just not feelin’ it. That thing is so damn skinny and fragile; it’s like a communion wafer. I don’t know about you, but I’m always hauling around my laptop and it takes quite a beating. I think the Air may be more of a lover than a fighter. I know it’s all shiny and pretty with its LED backlit screen, ambient-light sensor, magnetic latch and multitouch trackpad (ala iPhone), but to me the real strength is in its eco-friendly side. The Air consumes the least amount of power of any Mac, has a highly recyclable, mercury-free aluminum enclosure, a Mercury-free LCD display with arsenic-free glass, uses PVC-free internal cables, utilizes largely recyclable, low-volume packaging, meets ENERGY STAR requirements and received a Silver rating from EPEAT. All that beauty done up nice and green. That’s quite an accomplishment. The new Air will retail for $1799 and is available now for pre-order.

Albert Einstein said “The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.” If that’s the case, the cat is out of the bag for Jonathon Ive. As many of you know, Jonathan has headed up the industrial design team at Apple since 1997 and is responsible for most of the company’s significant hardware products. This includes the iMac, iPod and iPhone. Well if you would like to see the inspiration for many of his ideas, look no further than Dieter Rams, the brilliant principal designer at Braun during the ’50s and ’60s. The similarities are remarkable. Gizmodo has a nice piece they boiled down from this article, complete with some great comparisons. I have to agree with Diaz regarding his comments about it being more about design evolution rather than “rip-offs”. But I have to admit, there is also something about it that bothers me. I’m just not sure what it is yet.

Holy Jeebus! Panasonic went ahead and done it again! At the opening of CES 2008 they unveiled a 150″ plasma television that dwarfed the measly 103″ one they featured last year. This new set is 11 feet wide and features 2k x 4k resolution, that’s four times the resolution of a 1080p set. Needless to say, it is now holds the title for the largest television set in the world. Although it is principally intended for digital cinema and commercial installations, I’m sure it won’t be long before it shows up on an episode of MTV Cribs. Here’s a short video and some shots of the monolith. Speculation puts the price at about $100k.

This week at CES 2008, Millennium Cell and Horizon Fuel Cell announced an exciting new portable energy source they are calling the HydroPak generator. No gas, batteries, wind or sun needed here, this new generator uses disposable, water-activated cartridges. That’s right, all you do is add water and you are ready to go with 14 continuous hours of 25 Watts of power. According to Millenium Cell, that’s “enough energy to recharge an average notebook computer 8 to 10 times” or “operate low power devices such as portable lights, notebook computers, portable televisions and ad hoc communications networks for more than 14 continuous hours.” Most importantly, the cartridges are stored dry which allows them to overcome the common problem of limited storability and shelf life that plagues traditional power sources such as batteries. In addition, the HydroPak operates quietly with no toxic fumes. The planned retail pricing is $400 for the system and $20 for the cartridges.

As many of you know Bill Gates is stepping down from the helm of Microsoft at the ripe old age of 52. This after working there for 35 years (he’s worked at Microsoft since he was 17!) and giving away nearly $14.4 billion dollars to charity. Not too bad of a career. I also know there are quite a few folks out there who are not so fond of old Bill. Regardless of your opinion, I think you will enjoy this video that was featured this year at what should be Bill’s last keynote at CES 2008. It’s jam-packed with celebrity cameos and self-effacing humor, speculating just what Bill will be up to after retirement. It’s interesting to see how relaxed and comfortable he seems, totally embracing his geekness.
