Honestly, one of the most neglected pieces of equipment in most home and office computer configurations is some sort of uninterrupted power supply (UPS). In addition to providing surge protection, they will keep your computer running until you can shut it down properly. Just ask anyone who has seen their computer or external hard drive rendered unusable after a power failure. APC is the leader in this field and the APC BE350R is a nice model. It can even communicate with your computer in order to shut down properly in the event you’re not around. Circuit City is featuring the BE350R right now for $32.99 with free shipping!

Time to offload that old analog video collection. You know you’d better make a digital copy of that Logan’s Run cassette before it degrades beyond repair. Blackmagic Design is about to make the process that much easier with their new Blackmagic Video Recorder. It is a device, only about the size of a Bic Lighter that allows you to capture video from any analog source such as VHS, Video-8, DVD, Set top boxes or any other composite video device. It then captures files directly to H.264 files for iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, YouTube, IPTV, Web or full resolution archiving. It comes in both consumer and professional editions and includes software to help edit the final product. So get out there and rescue that old movie collection before it’s gone forever. The Blackmagic Video Recorder will be available in mid July for $119 with the SDI (pro) model retailing for $299.

Wow, this isn’t your nephew’s frat house foosball table. Named for the number of players on each team, the ‘11′ was the result of a collaboration between GRO design and Tim Modelmakers. Designed specifically to be shown at Milan Design Week, the team wanted to focus on an object they “could enhance through design, and that had lacked serious design attention in recent years.” I’ll say, foosball tables don’t exactly scream out high design. Inspired by the current trend of stadiums being built with strong architectural and sculptural beauty, the team was “interested in creating atmosphere through form, colour, material and subtle use of light.” Each player is machined from solid brass and finished in bright-silver highly polished chrome. After clicking the link below, make sure you page through the photos using the arrows, it really is remarkable.

Hey, when it comes to preserving the rainforest, every little bit helps. So next time you reach for that jimmy hat, make sure it’s from Natex. Natex is a new Brazilian company, located in Xapuri which is the first factory to produce condoms with latex from Amazon trees. These condoms will be produced with natural, sustainable materials from seringai trees and will help reduce the country’s dependence on imported condoms. According to the Brazilian government, Brazil is the biggest buyer of condoms in the world, importing more than a billion of the contraceptives in recent years to give away as part of the country’s national program to combat HIV. The factory will produce about 100 million condoms annually and will provide about 150 jobs for rubber tappers in the region. In addition, Natex condoms are 10% more cost-effective to produce and are also more resistant for having 50% less minerals than cultivation latex.

Boy, it’s hard to believe that just a short time ago folks were walking around with video cameras equipped with shoulder supports. You remember those, don’t you? On top of the fact that you were basically carrying the equivalent of a car battery on your shoulder, the video quality wasn’t anything to write home about either. Well, we’ve come a long way. This week Sony released a new model that is being dubbed the world’s smallest full HD camcorder. The new titanium-bodied Sony HDR-TG1 is a diminutive 1.3-inches wide by 4.7-inches tall by 2.5-inches deep and is capable of recording 1920 x 1080 HD video and 4-megapixel digital photos! The media is stored directly to Sony Memory Stick PRO Duo™ or PRO Duo Mark2 media cards. In addition, the HDR-TG1 features a high-quality Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 10x optical zoom lens, Dolby® Digital 5.1-channel surround sound, face detection technology, and a unique processing engine that automatically adjusts under- or over-exposed areas in a picture. Click here for a gallery of the HDR-TG1.

I have to admit, it’s sort of sad to see all of these companies clamoring to develop something to compete with the Jesus phone. For the most part, it has been nothing but an exercise in futility, however, I think some of the smoke is starting to clear. This is especially true when you see a product like Lenovo’s new Ideapad U8. Packaged in a beautiful ergonomic design, this feature-rich “internet device” looks to be a real player. All the specs are still yet to be confirmed but we do know that it will be running the new micro-sized Intel Atom chip, has a 4.8 inch touchscreen, supports 3G, EDGE, has GPS, hand written note taking, and support for MS Office applications. More importantly, in the photos it looks to have a full phone keypad which hopefully means it will be capable of making calls. Check out the video for the full marketing experience.

Already putting those new CFLs to shame, some smart boys over at Luxim labs have created a light bulb, not much bigger than a Flintstone chewable, that is more powerful than a modern day streetlight. Utilizing some serious scientific voodoo, the Argon gas filled LiFi bulbs transform the contents into plasma as electricity is focused through it. This process allows virtually all of the energy to be converted to light instead of heat as a conventional bulb does. At 140 lumens/watt, these bulbs are 10 times more efficient than traditional incandescent light bulbs, twice as efficient as current high-end LEDs, and also beat CFLs, most of which are around 50-80 lumens/watt. Moreover, they are not plagued with the issue of unattractive light like most high-efficiency light sources. The color rendering index (CRI) for the LiFi is 91 (max is 100). This is the index that measures the ability of a light source to reproduce colors naturally. In addition, the lifetime for the LiFi bulb is estimated at 20,000 hours! Page down and watch the video, it’s truly amazing.

The stage was set, one sponsor, three computers, three different operating systems and a boatload of hackers. This year at the CanSecWest Applied Security Conference, a MacBook Air running Mac OS X, a Fujitsu laptop running Vista SP1 and a Sony Vaio running Linux were all pitted against each other in a nerd Battle Royale. The rules were simple, hack into one of the systems, run your own software and the computer was yours for the taking. Well, the results are in; The MacBook Air fell on day two, with the Fujitsu biting the dust on day three and the Linux-sourced Sony left crying “Adrienne” in the center of the ring, undefeated. There were a few attempts to break the Linux but none succeeded. Terri Forslof, a manager of security response with TippingPoint said “I was surprised that it didn’t go.”

Let’s face it, the technology of today’s television sets are outpacing the design by light years. I mean come on, they can only get so thin and for the most part your color choices come down to black, silver or black and silver. Taking a cue from some of those old amazing television designs of yore, London-based ChauhanStudio has developed a new design for Humax Electronics that will be unveiled at Milan’s Zona Tortona design show. Looking like the son of HAL or maybe a leftover prop from Blade Runner, the LCD TV concept is an exercise in retro-futurism. There isn’t much yet in the way of specs, but it looks to have a speaker built in to the base and features a nice small footprint.

Here’s some hope for those of you out there that consider yourself laundry-challenged. You know who you are, mixing colors with whites, too much or too little detergent, unaware of the consequences of bleach, etc. Well here is your chance to make your life a little easier and most importantly, much greener. Laundry detergent is just loaded with all sorts of things that wreak havoc with the eco-system, whether it’s leaching into our drinking water, damaging fish DNA or causing all sorts of allergies. However, the folks behind Dropps have tried to eliminate these dangers and just maybe make laundry day a little easier. Dropps are small little pods of super concentrated (6x) detergent that you drop into your washing machine. No more messy bottles or measuring needed, the biodegradable “power pacs” simply dissolve in the wash water. As a result, it reduces the footprint of the packaging considerably. One empty jug of detergent equals 292 of the Dropps packaging pouches. In addition, they are phosphate free, chlorine free, NPE (Nonylphenol Ethoxylates) free, safe for septic tanks and are he (high efficiency) compatible. Dropps are readily available at your local Whole Foods, Target, Wal-Mart or Amazon right now for $22.46.

This week I was about to get up on my soapbox, but luckily for you I talked myself down. I was going to feature this story highlighting the fact that NVIDIA video drivers have been responsible for an incredible 28.8% of all Vista crashes. It’s important to point out that this figure also includes all the computers that don’t have NVIDIA graphic cards! So next time you want to take a swing at old Bill and the big M, maybe stop and consider the fact that not everything is always Microsoft’s fault. Oh, that’s right; I was not supposed to be on my soapbox. Sorry, in that case, I will just say that the only thing better than a prank on April Fool’s Day is a prank on any other day. So even though it’s April 2nd, here are ten pranks you can plan out and play on your coworkers and friends in the next 364 days. Have fun.
